"Four Pass Loop", Maroon Bells 0911-0914 2009

John, Randy and I started a 4 day, 22 mile backpack trip around the "Four Pass Loop" in the Maroon Bells Wilderness. Our initial plan was for Randy to bring his two Llamas, Reggie and Sallah to help carry some luxury goods - large tent, steak, scallops , potatoes, pancakes, sausage... that sort of thing. The Llamas were very popular and people were constantly asking to have their pictures taken with them. Unfortunately, Randy got sick on the second day and had to return home - with the Llamas. That left John and I to complete the loop which we did in great form. Perhaps the most surprising thing I heard on this trip was when John, a 10-time IronMan Athlete, said at the third pass that this was much harder than an IronMan event. He later recanted this somewhat but the point remains: Climbing high mountain passes isn't easy and climbing several of them in one trip is just HARD.

This was John's first backpack trip in the Rockies and he got to see a lot of what these mountains have to offer: Beautiful scenery, volatile weather (snow, hail, rain, wind) with lots of variation in a relatively small area. Though we seemed to be in the middle of nowhere, we never were more than around 5 miles from the trailhead - as the crow flies.

All in all, this was one of the best backpack trips I have ever been on!! Thank you John and Randy (and Reggie and Sallah, of course!).
