Kerfuffle in the Collegiates July 15-17, 2011
Backpacking in the Collegiates from after work Friday until Sunday afternoon... Thereby maximizing exposure to the magic hours (IMHO) of from 8am to 8pm.

June 24, 2011 - It is supposed to be summer but...
We started with a stream crossing. This water is snow melt derived and COLD! |
It was a relief to get to the other side and stand on a warm rock. |
Just a quarter mile up from the trailhead it was snow going |
Sometimes the "trail" was pretty steep |
We camped after searching over 3 hours for a bit of dry ground for our tent. |
This is the view from our campsite. There was over FIVE feet of snow on the ground everywhere. |
All in all this was an excellent adventure! |

Our now annual Hut Trip to the 10th Mountain Hut
We had another great Hut Trip this year. John and Randy made all the arrangements and secured all the food. As before and despite efforts to secure a reservation at another Hut, we ended up at the 10th Mountain Hut again. We set out early Friday morning in beautiful conditions with sun and fresh snow everywhere. That night, a few set out for a midnight stroll up towards Slide Lake and they found perfect conditions with a nearly full moon and still air. As this small group returned to the Hut, the weather was changing with increasing cloud and winds.
By Saturday morning it was clear that a significant storm had arrived and it brought blowing snow all day long. Many chose to relax at the Hut while others ventured out to explore, dig out a disused Igloo and such.
Sunday arrived clear and sunny again and this presented perfect conditions for the trip back to the trail head. This was the first year we saw that the snow was so deep that the trip back amounted to a death march with very little gliding.
Several in our group this year brought pulks (towable sleds) and as a result we were able to carry truly gourmet food. Our Friday night meal consisted of thick juicy steaks and lobster tails with fresh salad followed by Snow Sorbet for dessert.
All in all, a GREAT trip indeed.

Second Creek training climb
Len and I really enjoyed ourselves on a beautiful trip up Second Creek which is just off Berthod Pass. We climbed to an A-Frame "cabin" which is mysterious in its origin and maintenance. It looks pretty rough but it is maintained to some degree. It looked weather tight but it was pretty dirty and I would only stay there in an emergency.

Lake Ann A G A I N - this time with Len
My friend Len hadn't been backpacking since his first and only trip many years ago and I invited him along on this quick over niter to help him get back in the game. We had excellent weather for early October with sunny warm days and a cold (25 degree) night. Len really got into the Zen aspects of backpacking and spent a lot of time just sitting and absorbing the amazing vistas and stillness.
